Warm temps plus sunny skies can only equal one thing: summer has officially arrived in our two Forks! While there are certainly many more, below are my top five SimplyGrand seasonal to-dos.
If you’re a fellow music lover, definitely add the Happy Harry’s Blues on the Red three-part summer music series to your calendar. The final two concerts take place July 28 and August 15 in Town Square. From 5 to 10 PM, listen to some of our region’s top blues musicians while enjoying tasty eats and drinks served up by local establishments. Admission is just $5 but the food and brews are extra.
Strolling or rolling on our beautifully groomed Greenway Trail System is a perfect way to enjoy a sunny day. Hop on a bike, strap on the inline skates or simply use your tennis shoes to propel yourself around. Like to try navigating our north-flowing Red River? Stop by Boathouse on the Red (weekends only from 10 AM to 8 PM) and rent a canoe, kayak or stand-up paddleboard. My favorite Greenway spot is near downtown because it’s easy to refuel with a yummy homemade cupcake or muffin from Paola’s Pastries and cup of freshly brewed java right down the street at Ember Coffeehouse. You can even do a little browsing at some of the many cool downtown shops like Kittsona, CURIOUS and Badman Design.
Held periodically throughout the year, Art & Wine Walk offers local artists a chance to display their talents and wares at several downtown Grand Forks and East Grand Forks businesses. A sample of wine will be available for those 21 years of age and older, with some locations also choosing to serve nonalcoholic beverages and snacks. From 1 to 5 PM, a wristband and map listing all participating venues may be purchased ($20) at Rhombus Guys Brewing Company or The Blue Moose Bar & Grill. 2018 remaining dates are August 11 and November 3. Another option for non-A&WW weekends is Grape Mill Vineyard & Winery in rural East Grand Forks. Their hours are Friday and Saturday 12 to 6 PM and 12 to 5 PM on Sunday. While there, tour through beautiful grape fields, check out the wine-making process and then relax with a glass of palate-pleasing vino. Guests can also enjoy live music every Saturday from 3 to 5 PM.
Play-a-round our two towns on three awesome courses. Lincoln Park Golf Course (Belmont Rd & Elks Dr) is a 9-hole course with bent grass greens and closely manicured fairways that will provide a superb golfing experience for all levels. Valley Golf Club (1800 21st St NW) features a scenic, challenging 18-hole layout which runs along the Red River on the Minnesota side. Considered one of the area’s premier courses, King’s Walk (5301 Columbia Rd S, GF) is an 18-hole Arnold Palmer Signature PGA Course. The prairie links style course stretches over 7,200 yards, with four sets of tees to accommodate players of all abilities. The clubhouse includes a pro shop and restaurant. If you’re new to golf, the Women’s Divot a Try beginner lessons, held every Tuesday evening throughout the summer, are a great way to see if the sport is for you!
On September 7 & 8, the 2018 Street Fair will fill downtown Grand Forks with numerous vendors selling everything from handmade pottery and soap to jewelry and clothing. There’ll also be numerous food vendors/trucks, plus a beer garden and live music.
